STATE COLLEGE — The State College softball team, under the direction of new coach Scott Kaminske, opened the 2026 season with an 11-1, five-inning thumping of Mifflin County on March 25 at home.
The game was scoreless until the Little Lady Lions erupted for six runs in the fourth inning and then five more in the fifth to win by the 10-run rule.
Seniors Sarah Williams and Lily Williams and freshman Harper Kaminske had two hits each. Senior Paige Moriarta and Sarah Williams and junior Kara Rhinehart drove in two runs each. Junior Sarah Mellott, sophomore Landry Moore and Kaminske scored two runs each.
In the pitching circle, Moriarta tossed a four-hitter, struck out 11 and walked three in her 83-pitch effort. The defense didn’t commit an error behind her.
BELLEFONTE 7, BISHOP GUILFOYLE 1
Bellefonte pounded out 14 hits, getting multiple hits from five different hitters, and Abby Herr struck out 17 en route to a 7-1 win over Bishop Guilfoyle on March 30 at O’Leary Fields.
Ella Herr led the Lady Red Raiders with three hits, including a double. Sloan Moore, Peyton Rimmey and Abby Herr were among those who had two hits. Riley Santostefano, Ella Herr and Rimmey had doubles.
Sophomore Abby Herr not only whiffed 17, she fired a one-hitter and walked two in her 110-pitch outing.
BALD EAGLE 17, HOLLIDAYSURG 11
Bald Eagle Area and Hollidaysburg combined for 28 runs, with the Lady Eagles came out on top, 17-11, on March 24 at Hollidaysburg.
But BEA lost to Bellwood-Antis, 8-3, on March 30 at home.
BEA’s Casey Angellotti had two hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs against Hollidaysburg. Kendall Gavlock smacked two doubles, while Hayley Simpson had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. Addisyn Burns and Lilly Harter delivered two hits, including a Harter double.
The Lady Eagles, who had 12 hits, scored seven runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the third and seventh inning, respectively.
Against Bellwood-Antis, BEA (1-2) managed only five hits off Palynn Gregg, including two apiece from Gavlock and Raelee Repasky. BEA pitchers Harlee Witherite and Karlee Fisher combined to give up 12 hits.
“We are work in progress,” BEA coach Don Lucas said. “Bellwood played a very solid game and were able to string hits together and score. We had opportunities but couldn’t get the big hit when we had runners on base.”
HOLLIDAYSBURG 20, PENNS VALLEY 8
Penns Valley opened the season on March 30 with a 20-8 loss to Hollidaysburg at home. No other details were available.
